Wellness Escapes and Natural Wonders on Sweden’s Tranquil Wellness Island

Should you travel to the small island of Styrsö in the West Sweden coastal region during the late 1800s or early 1900s, odds were you needed a cure for respiratory illness. Back then, the isle drew city dwellers seeking ocean air, coastal swims, and calm. Because of the efforts of a well-known local doctor, a number of sanatoriums gained such a excellent reputation that the island became known as a recovery haven. Although those peak years are now past, a modern wellness-focused hotel aims to rekindle that rejuvenating atmosphere.

A Sanctuary of Calm and Pure Air

Those same features that initially brought health seekers to the island remain to this day. Nestled and protected from harsh winds, the southern coast receives sunlight from dawn to dusk. There’s no contamination here. Styrsö is a profoundly peaceful place – you can truly de-stress and restore your energy,” explained the hotel manager in a personal visit. The moment you board the ferry, your pulse rate drops and you commence breathing in the good air.”

An Adventure of Leisurely Exploration

Embracing the idea of decelerating, we came by train starting in the UK using Interrail passes, stopping overnight in Hamburg. Arriving Gothenburg in the late afternoon, we wandered the old town before catching a tram to Saltholmen harbour and a speedy passenger vessel. In just an hour, we moved from city center to island hotel.

Right on the coast with stunning views of adjacent Donsö island, the 40-room hotel is a modern building designed in soothing Nordic tones, complete with a light-filled restaurant, spa zone, and warm pool. Our room – among the waterfront options – was generous, clean-lined, and boasted a terrace.

Green Design and Local Focus

This property is built with sustainability in mind – using renewable heating and liquid underfloor heating. It’s also pursuing Green Key status. Each detail is acquired from regional suppliers, from the employees and food ingredients to the ocean algae and sea salt used in the relaxation offerings.

Havskuren is organized into dual areas. The first section includes hydrotherapy, skin therapies, and a relaxation space. The second area contains a sauna, humid chamber, and plunge pool. Additionally, there is a compact gym. Massages are in development for the coming months.

Culinary offerings highlight Scandinavian-influenced dishes such as scallops, flatfish, and wholesome vegan options.

Exploring the Tranquil Island

Biking, strolling, ocean dips, and culinary enjoyment are essential parts of the island stay. We were provided with well-maintained two-wheelers to explore the compact island, which is virtually car-free. Throughout three days, the main transport we encountered on the smooth roads were bikes, buggies, and trike scooters that looked like motorized wheelbarrows.

On a sunny day, after gathering supplies at the island Co-op, we rode to a tiny islet reached by a footbridge for a outdoor meal experience. Later on, we still had room for fika – indulging in espressos with a cinnamon bun and a generous chokladbollar at a historic inn that operated as a herring merchant.

Woodland Hikes and Seafood Feasts

Our walks on the wooded southern side of the island included a breathtaking evening hike along a pathway leading to a ancient stone pile at a vantage spot, which offers a sweeping outlook across the coastal islands. Returning in the night, we encountered the path with dozens of minute frogs, many no bigger than a thumbnail. These likely were meals for the wading birds we observed while exploring.

Returning to the hotel, we dined in the spacious restaurant overlooking the water. The menu includes Nordic-inspired seafood dishes such as shellfish, flatfish, and nutritious vegan options using fresh vegetables. We tried small plates of chanterelle and oyster mushrooms, followed by toasted hazelnuts over a rich potato base – each was delicious.

Putting on wetsuits and entered the inviting, surprisingly warm seawater, observing our guide carefully collect sea plants.

Spa Experiences

At night, we tried out the spa. Malin handed us a range of natural lotions prepared by hand, and we enjoyed the foot-baths, steam room, and cold pool. Following that, we unwinded in the warm pool with vistas of the ocean and the twinkling lights of Donsö.

Island-Hopping and Local Eateries

A link has connected Styrsö with nearby Donsö for more than 50 years, so we biked across to enjoy an open-air lunch at a quayside café operated by local sisters. Their offerings feature items sourced by friends, delicious bread and cakes made by family, and regular music. Later, we went back to the harbour for a delectable dinner featuring seasonal produce, winter gourds, and a creamy blend at a converted fishing depot that now is a eatery.

Seaweed Safari and Ocean-to-Table

The last day was dedicated to a coastal education experience with a guide who formerly was a potter. We commenced with a scenic cycle tour of the resident zone of the island, home to the majority of the full-time residents. Our guide led us slowly up and down gentle hills adorned by well-kept homes, each distinct.
