British government has added eleven more nations to its official alert roster regarding the dangers of methanol toxicity from adulterated spirits.
The expanded warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "an international surge in the incidence of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol contamination.
Just recently, authorities had earlier placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current register, after multiple high-profile events including the fatal demise of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being cautions that even minimal doses of industrial alcohol can result in blindness or loss of life within 12 to 48 hours.
Methanol is a harmful chemical often employed in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. It is not designed for human consumption.
While it is naturally produced during the production of beverages, licensed producers lower it to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the refining procedure.
However in various destinations, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to save money, and because it is tasteless and scentless, it is impossible to detect.
Authorities minister Hamish Falconer stated that all travellers should recognize the signs of methanol toxicity.
"When you are drinking spirits in foreign countries, opt for reputable establishments and avoid homemade alcohol or unspecified beverages," Falconer warned.
"If something appears suspicious, for example a headache that's far more intense than normal or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention immediately."
The complete list of nations listed as presenting a danger of industrial alcohol toxicity now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
