Shock as Orbán Allies Take Over the Nation's Most-Read Newspaper

Journalists at the country's leading publication have voiced surprise after a media conglomerate considered aligned with PM Viktor Orbán's political faction, Fidesz, acquired the popular daily from its earlier Swiss owners.

Context of Purchase

The buyout, which coincides with Hungary gears up for crucial elections next year, is largely considered another effort to expand state control on the media.

A government-aligned media company, Indamedia, stated on Friday it had bought a group of Hungarian titles, including Glamour magazine and Blikk, a influential daily newspaper whose online platform attracts approximately three million digital visitors monthly.

Management Changes

Blikk's departing chief editor, Ivan Zolt Nagy, announced on Monday that he and another senior manager were exiting in "mutual agreement" with the acquiring company.

Their recruitment occurred seven months ago to reposition Blikk, "moving away from sensational stories but on engaging content" and to be "more reader-centered, reporting on political affairs, economics, and culture," he commented on Facebook.

Employee Responses

Staff at Blikk said they were stunned. "I almost had a heart attack when I heard the news," said one correspondent, who requested to remain unidentified. "In my view, this is morally unacceptable."

Blikk has named a new editor-in-chief, Baláz Kolossváry.

Press Environment Concerns

Many journalists who have chosen to remain acknowledge feeling in a challenging situation as there are not many other publications remaining where they could look for work.

Over the past 15 years, Orbán has been able to use a sprawling pro-government news ecosystem to strengthen his public perception and public opinion ratings.

Political Timing

While important publication transactions have tended to take place either after elections or during a quiet political period, the acquisition of Ringier Hungary occurs fewer than six months ahead of April's national vote.

Blikk was considered a prime target for Orbán and his party at a time when opinion research are signalling that they have a genuine competitor for the initial occasion in over a decade.

Opposition Response

The rival candidate, Péter Magyar, whose Respect and Freedom party is promoting commitments to eliminate entrenched dishonesty, has been outspoken about Orbán's "propaganda factory" and the negative impact he says it has affected Hungary's political freedom.

He has criticised the Ringier Hungary transaction, declaring it represents another attempt by Orbán to strengthen his grip over Hungary's media outlets.

Newspaper's Importance

While Blikk is a tabloid, famous for its celebrity news and sensational captions, in the recent years it has also featured numerous articles on suspected graft.

"Blikk is by far the most read daily newspaper in Hungary, a sector dominator," stated a media analyst. "The web version has become surprisingly popular in recent years, becoming the fourth most read digital platform in Hungary. If partisan content appears in such extensively consumed and influential publications, it will have an impact on the general population."

International Perspective

For exceeding a decade, Hungary has functioned as a blueprint for other "authoritarian-leaning governments" internationally.

Ex-US administrators and their allies have frequently applauded Orbán's Hungary even as it falls in press freedom rankings.

In 2022, Orbán spoke to a meeting of US right-leaning politicians that the way to governance required "owning press organizations."

Historical Media Regulation

In 2010, Orbán's government passed a law that imposed government control over the chief communications authority and placed the state broadcaster in the management of loyalists.

Proprietorship Information

Indamedia is half-owned by Mikló Vaszily, a government-supporting businessman who is also chief executive of a government-friendly television station.

In a declaration, Indamedia's additional partner and CEO, Gábor Ziegler, stated: "Through the acquisition of Ringier Hungary, the organization is gaining a well-performing press organization of similar size to Indamedia, with strong market positions and successful brands that play a defining role in the Hungarian communications sector."

Ringier announced in a statement that its decision to sell was "driven exclusively by strategic economic considerations and our focus on our main internet businesses in Hungary."

A state communicator was sought for response.
