A boss of Domino's Pizza Group who proposed the United Kingdom might have hit pizza saturation while diversifying the franchise into chicken products has been removed after tensions with its board.
Andrew Rennie is exiting after a brief tenure in the top role, and will be replaced on an temporary basis by the company's chief operating officer, Frampton, while Domino's searches for a long-term chief.
Rennie, who was with the company for a substantial period, had attempted to shift Britain's leading pizza food delivery firm towards poultry-based products, commenting recently there was not “massive growth” left in the UK's pizza market. He said poultry was the quickest rising menu item in the globe.
Reports indicate that there was friction between Rennie and the governance team over his strategy and management style, although the company's announcement said he was leaving “as a joint decision”.
In September, the chain introduced its chicken-focused offering – which Rennie called a “bold new chapter” for the company – and is testing it in select stores in the North West region and the province.
While the firm is still intending to launch it across its almost 1,400 stores in 2026 as scheduled, it considers chicken products as a supplement for its main pizza offerings.
The Domino's chair, the company chair, said: “The board believes that there are a range of possibilities to drive further growth and performance improvement in the main pizza segment. We are concentrating on identifying the right chief executive to direct the disciplined execution of that growth strategy.”
In the latest update, Domino's, which has 13 million customers in the British Isles, said transactions declined by 1.5 percent in the third quarter. In August, it alerted that the takeaway market had “become tougher” as it blamed weaker consumer confidence in the lead-up to the government announcement and rising wage costs for below-target performance and a 15% drop in half-year profits.
Rival chains are also facing challenges. Pizza Hut disclosed the closing of dozens of outlets a recently, after the business behind its UK venues faced financial collapse.
Responding to consumer trends towards balanced diets, the company has launched lower-calorie options, such as its light base range of bakes below 400 calories as well as vegan and gluten-free pizzas. A family-sized pepperoni has over 2,300 kcal. A big margherita has 2,171, while a personal has 909 calories.
Nicola Frampton has been with the company since the recent past, and was formerly with the betting firm William Hill. It is thought that she is not seeking to occupy the chief executive role on a full-time basis.
She said: “We have a several current development and performance initiatives that we will be dedicated to carrying out at pace.”
She added these involved ongoing development on the company's logistics network and menu innovation, and its loyalty scheme.
The pizza chain is also in need of a permanent chief financial officer until the spring, when a new appointee comes aboard from the beverage producer a well-known firm. For now, Snow serves as temporary CFO.
